Tales Q&A with Jenny Han

A couple of months ago I received a copy of P.S I Still Love You by Jenny Han in the post from Scholastic and after hearing about this book back in January at the Scholastic Blogger Brunch I was excited!

P.S I Still Love You is the sequel to All The Boys I’ve Loved Before bringing Lara Jean and her love letters back into our lives.

Today I am honoured to be joined by the lovely Jenny Han who stopped by to answer some bookish questions!

Hi Jenny!

Welcome to Tales Of Yesterday!  I am so excited to have you here!  Thank you so much!

I’m just going to start off by letting people know a bit about To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S I Still Love You.

Lara Jean keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. One for every boy she’s ever loved. When she writes, she can pour out her heart and soul and say all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only.Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control.

Lara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter.
She and Peter were just pretending. Except suddenly they weren’t. Now Lara Jean is more confused than ever.
When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean’s feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?

In this charming and heartfelt sequel to the New York Times bestseller To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, we see first love through the eyes of the unforgettable Lara Jean. Love is never easy, but maybe that’s part of what makes it so amazing.

Two brilliant books!

So what inspired you to write the story of Lara Jean?

I used to write love letters to boys when I was trying to get over them, and it would just be very passionate emotions and I would seal them up and put them in this hatbox that I had. They were these really, really long observations and thoughts, fourteen pages long! I did it for my own sense of closure, of good-bye. Thank God my letters did not get sent out, they were just for me. But Lara Jean’s letters obviously did get sent out and it sets her off on an adventure.

What would you do / how would you react if those letters were ever made public?

If that had happened to me… I can’t even. The mortification!

Do you see yourself in any of the characters in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before or P.S. I Still Love You?

I was so much like Lara Jean. I had very intense crushes on boys but often preferred the dream of a boy to the reality of an actual relationship. I liked (and still do!) to read, and bake, and hang out with my little sister. As for how we’re different, I would say I was probably more outgoing than her when I was 16. I liked running around with my friends and getting into a little (but not too much) mischief. I’m also a big sister, so in a lot of ways, I’m also like Margot—I like to give advice and be bossy.

Did you always intend to write a sequel to To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before?

I think it figured it out about halfway through. There’s one other character we don’t spend much time with, and I thought there was a lot to explore with him, and it didn’t really fit in the arc of this book. I thought it (and he) deserved its/his own arc.

Do you have any strange writing habits?

I don’t write in order. I write whatever I feel like writing that day, and then I put it all together later.

Are there any authors you would like to collaborate with?  Who?

I actually co-wrote a trilogy with my BFF, Siobhan Vivian! It’s called Burn for Burn, and it’s a delicious read about unlikely friendships, revenge, and first love.

Bit of a random question but I really enjoyed your story in the Christmas anthology My True Love Gave To Me.  Were you contacted to write the story of Natty for the anthology?

untitled

Stephanie Perkins is a friend of mine, and she asked me to contribute a short story for the anthology. I was super busy with the sequel for P.S. I Still Love You but I couldn’t resist. “Polaris Is Where You’ll Find Me” started out as a joke, just a fun idea I thought up on a lark.

You can find my review of My True Love Gave To Me here

Can you give us 5 random facts we don’t know about Jenny Han?

1. My house is Slytherin but my heart is Beauxbatons

2. I love to bake!

3. I had a major crush on Leonardo DiCaprio

4. I am a Clueless expert

5. I do not believe in pockets for formal wear

Thank you so much for stopping by Jenny it was great!
