Do you remember the Point Horror Book Series from the 90’s? The Point Horror Series was a series of young adult point horror books and was launched in 1991 by Scholastic always with the Point Horror banner on the spine and on the top of every point horror book. There were a number of authors that wrote these books for Scholastic: R L Stine, Diane Hoh, Caroline B Cooney, Sinclair Smith to name but a few.

Are the Point Horror books we loved as a teenager still our favourites on the re-read? Are you new to Point Horror? Has our opinion changed? Are they still as good? Do they stand up to modern day YA Horror? Or are they a whole load of cray cray?

Lets find out…

She’d kill for a date….

Okay ….so…What’s It All About?

It’s coming up to Prom Night at Toomey High!  You know that night where you get to go to a fancy dance, with a fancy date, in a beautiful fancy prom dress……unless of course someone wants YOUR date all to themselves!

Wait?!  What?!

Yes that’s right!  Someone REALLY wants to go to Prom so they are going to bump off the competition and when they still get turned down for a date bump off some more competition!

Oh the horror!

And that’s not all!  What persues is ruined Prom dresses, creepy lighthouses, a dead body floating in the water, dumpster fires, cash box face hitting and bumper cars!

It’s carnage in this Point Horror I tell you!  Carnage!

So the cancel the Prom right?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha …. you’ve got some good jokes!

*picks out Prom dress*

The Girl

Margaret Dunne was our girl and I kind of liked her.  With her light brown, very fine, straight hair, tall and thin body with good skin that had never seen a blemish in all her life she was a bit of a typical point horror girl, but there was just something different about her.  Could it have been the way she moved so gracefully or her amazing doe shaped deep brown eyes?  Or even her long thick upturned eyelashes or even the fact that she loved sunglasses?  I’m not sure, but she seemed to have it together and in her own words she was an intelligent born leader.  She had never dated a boy exclusively for any length of time, but she was not a heartbreaker, she could never hurt any one.  Margaret loved books and rejected her Mom Adrienne’s attempts to “Beautify” her and most importantly she was most definitely not going to prom!

Well that was of course until hot boy Mitch came along!

Then all bets were off!

Did anyone else notice she called her Mom by her name, Adrienne, for most of the book and the occasional Mom slipped in there every now and again?

Anyway she did adore her Mom and I quite liked the scenes when they were together.  It was great to see a Point Horror Mom not only in a Point Horror, but acting like a Mom too!  Go Adrienne!

That being said Adrienne wasn’t around when Margaret was almost burning to death in a dumpster!  No!  She was swanning it up at Impeccable Tastes with her unnamed boyfriend!  Poor Margaret had to be saved by…….her own shoe!

Margaret does get thrown in the firing line of the Prom Date killer though when her love interest shows up and asks her to prom……

The Love Interest

Other than the million prom dates whos dates get bumped off or injured throughout the book i.e. Michael Danz the poor thing, there was one hot main love interest for Margaret…..Mitch McGill!

With his warm spaniel brown eyes, strong bones and great face.  He was tall with broad shoulders had thick dark hair and a nice smile…… he was our typical Point Horror boy and actually pretty decent.  Not Chelley fancying pretty decent, but decent.

He was a nice all round guy and he genuinely seemed to really like and care for Margaret and I loved how he seemed to avoid the Pop’s at all costs.

He did give me a chuckle though when he got asked to Prom by future Prom Date killer reveal Liza, but didn’t think to mention it until right at the end because you know it wasn’t important…..THERE WAS ONLY A KILLER KILLING OFF BOYS PROM DATES ON THE LOOSE but hey ho!

The Gang

Only fair to start off with best friend to Margaret, Caroline LaSalle.  With her bronze and muddy water coloured hair, good skin, her eyes a little green and a little gray and her thin face that was sharp around the edges no wonder people thought she and Margaret were sisters(?!).  She of course was not going to prom and was holding out for a hot guy to ask her even though a poor underused boy called Scott was pining after her.  She liked to always be right and planned to buy turquoise contact lenses…..well that’s if she ever remembered to put them in, but then say she didn’t say she hadn’t put them in, but really had *mind swirls*.

She was the classic red herring best friend and to be honest let Margaret off quite easily when she got accused of being the murderer because she was so desperate to go to Prom (not).  She did try and pull the feel guilty for going to prom without me Margaret card and I do wish Scott had turned her down when she finally asked him to the prom but other than that she was okay.

Then there were Margaret’s two other best friends because of course there had to be four to make a Quartet (a common theme throughout the book)….Jeannine Baker with her narrow face, tall and thin as a stick frame and red frizzy hair and Lacey Dowd who in contrast was short, stocky (grrrrr very R L Stine, but at least Hoh didn’t make her the murderer!) with a dutch boy bright blonde haired bob.  They were not very good friends really were they…..I mean as soon as one of the Pop’s was bumped off and couldn’t go to the prom they were right there trying to poach their dates.  I did do an evil chuckle when they didn’t end up going to prom in the end!  All the lollingtons!

Then there were The Pop’s……Stiney was way ahead of his time here I think with his unique name for “The Plastics”.

Up first is top Pop Stephanie Markham who may only be remembered for floating by the rocks in her yellow jacket….dead.  Yes that’s right she got pushed from the top of an old creepy lighthouse….that must have hurt!  With her love for all things yellow, her credit card and a prime candidate for prom queen she was our classic queen of the bitches.  She was tall and leopard sleek with dark hair like black velvet and perfect porcelain skin…..did she really deserve to be pushed to her death because someone wanted her Prom Date?

No YOUR nodding!

Then of course to make up the Pop’s Quartet there was olive skinned, perfect make up Kiki and blue eyed, quite the artist and a quieter kid of beauty Beth Andrews.

And then the brilliant Liza Buffet!

OMG I think I loved Liza as the evil, desperate to go to Prom, murderer.  She was described as not as mean as Stephanie, tall, blond and although red was not her colour she loved to kill!  She would do anything for a date and I think that whole scene at the end just made me go QUEEN!  More on that later!  I loved the chapters when we saw her thought process and inside her head and I loved how she just had to have a date to prom so she figures she will eliminate all of her friends.

QUEEN!

I can’t not mention little Scott Noonan with his thing for Caroline.  With his freckles, blue eyes and bushy red hair.  He was severely under used in this Point Horror and didn’t really get a time to shine.  I mean he sometimes bought Caroline a single yellow rose for crying out loud….that’s just too adorable right?!

Fashion Faux Pas

I didn’t spot too many….but a horn rimmed glasses and pink suit combo did slip in there some where although I’m unsure who was wearing this!

There was also a bright yellow shorts and top combi that Lacey wore to the hospital!

*pops on Margaret’s sunglasses*

Dialogue Disasters

“How could your best friend be completely insane without you knowing it?”

I’ve said it before and I will say it again….THIS IS POINT HORROR!

“Was Caroline really insane?  Was that why she’d been doing so much reading about mental illness, because she was afraid she had it?”

NO HOH!  NO!  GRRRRRRRRRR

“His obvious concern warmed her like a wool sweater”

Margaret likes it as hot as a dumpster in her sweaters!

“After a long drought even a few drops of water were a blessing”

This is Margaret’s comparison to dating…….*coughs*

“One of these days he’s going to get tired of being treated like the contents of a vacuum cleaner bag”

Poor Scott was living his own Point Horror nightmare!

“The image of me in a prom dress would be as hard for them to grasp as the meaning of a Shakespeare sonnet”

To be or not to be….

“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”

Says Margaret waking up from sleep in her hospital bed…..I think this is when Hoh gave Stiney the idea for The Snowman!

“This wasn’t one of those disgusting teen horror films where the girl was so desperate for a date, she took a chain saw to anyone who stood in her way”

No THATS what we call a Point Horror!

“I cannot believe that someone is attacking girls to keep them from attending their senior prom!  It so totally insane!”

It’s so totally Point Horror!

Body Count

1 full on push someone off the top of a light house murder!

Yeah!

Plus of course one stray cat poisoned by accident (death by milk) and three near misses for our other characters!

It was awesome!

Is it scary?

Hmmmmmm not really ….. more borderline slasher horror film that kept me guessing until the very end…..I mean it could have been anyone!

Did the best friend do it?

Oh yes!  One of the Pop’s best friends of course, but it still totally counts!

I mean I was all for Scott being the reveal to be honest because it would have been a better twist than the one we had…….but still Liza took the Pop’s friendship oath of “One For All.  And All For One” very seriously indeed!

And that ending scene when she comes into Prom like something out of Sunset Boulevard was just a Point Horror classic moment!  Just brilliant!

gloria-swanson-norma-desmond

This being said another good twist would have been that the Pop’s Moms did it……you know it would have been great!  #QuartetForever

Some Mild Peril?

I guess climbing a creepy rotten lighthouse and being pushed off the edge, being locked in a burning dumpster after a failed poison attempt and basically become human prom date bait for Liza classes as mild peril right?

Is it any good?

I have to say I really really enjoyed this one.  It was a lot longer than our normal Point Horror, but I really liked the feel to it.  It had a good range of suspects and a pretty decent storyline.  I could quite easily imagine this being a 90’s film and really enjoying it.

Shout out to the brilliantly names shops in this little old town – Quartet, Impeccable Tastes – I basically want to live there…..but not go any where near Prom!

Try to stay cool….because fever kills!

Okay ….so…What’s It All About?

Poor old Duffy Quinn has a fever and has been admitted to Twelvetrees hospital?!

Oh No!  Poor Duffy!  She must be really ill!  I bet her parents are worried sick (excuse the pun)!

Ermmmmmm not exactly.  Basically her Mum & Dad are extremely busy accountants and just do not have the time to look after their daughter whilst they are doing their tax returns!

Lol!  What a good excuse for missing parents in Point Horror!  So was Duffy okay?

Suffering from a fever Duffy thinks she has imagined an incident that happened in her room when she shouted out for help in the middle of the night (and was ignored…how very dare they).  She is trying so hard to work out what she has heard that someone decides that Duffy deserves to die!  That’s when the nausea, dizziness and funny lights start and fever aside basically all Duffy really wanted was a shower!

A shower?!  Hasn’t Duffy seen Pyscho?

The killer is so determined to bump off Duffy by any means!  This includes swapping of an out of order elevator sign, releasing the brake off Duffy’s wheelchair down a hill (laughs hysterically), trys to kill her in the shower and with a pillow!

*gasps*

Fear not Duffy has a pink razor, bug spray and a wide range of Point Horror boys to save her at every turn!

The Hospital

Yep the only hospital in Twelvetrees is getting a heading all of it’s own!

Wow!  What a hospital!

I loved the creepy tall, grim, gradually decaying building with it’s worn grey stones, mildew and covered in ivy walls setting.  And not to forget mentioning the wooden wheelchairs (!).  It was like something out of a horror movie….only with real live patients, staff and volunteers inside!

I don’t think it was the swapped medication that was making Duffy ill….it was obviously those pea green slacks and tunic combo that the safe wore as uniform.

And lets not go there with health and safety and hygiene……how was this hospital still running?!?

The Doctor

Dr Jonus Morgan took on a whole new level of Dr I just had to give him a quick mention.  Young, tall, boney and skinny with thick shagging eyebrows, beard and gold earing he really did not look after his patient well did he?  And although he frowned a lot I kind of found him more appealing than the boys in this Point Horror – more on that later!

The Girl

Cue worst patient in the world….well according to everyone in this Point Horror anyway…..

Dorothy “Duffy” Quinn with her sudden unexplained fever, cinnamon red hair, pretty oval face, temper and her self proclaimed odd sense of humour had never been sick before!  And after ending up in Twelvetrees hospital I bet she never wants to be sick ever again!

I’m not entirely sure what I think of Duffy.  She did have some get up and go in her as I think most Point Horror girls would have just lay there in the hospital bed.  I mean Duffy was determined to have a shower after all as she obviously found the expert sponge baths and delicious back rubs the nurses gave her as creepy as I did whilst reading it!

She did go through a lot before she figured out someone was trying to kill her though.  There was the Elevator scare, the runaway wheelchair (omg that was hilarious – sorry Duffy), shower attack and then the pillow attack and of course someone changing her medication!  Who knew a pink ladies razor, a carafe of water and a can of bug spray would come in handy!

*pops these by the side of my bed forever…just in cases*

I mean that must have hurt right?!

And yes a ladies razor bloomin hurts when you cut your leg shaving!

thepinklady

All in all Duffy was a determined Point Horror girl even when no one believed her over anything.  Even her parents!  The less said about them the better!

I found her quite entertaining.  Especially when she ran out of the shower looking like this in my head……

ring20

Or was this just the effect of the Digoxin?!

The Love Interest

There was that many boys lusting after Duffy whilst she was high with fever that I do not know who the love interest was in the end so I’m renaming this heading….

The Boys

Oh where to start!

One thing these boys all had in common is that they were all lusting after Duffy!  Fever or no fever!

Okay lets go with the boy version of Cinderella only without the happy ending……Kit Rappaport! Cute, smart and nice, a math wizard with carroty red hair.  Duffy rescued his frog and they had been good friends ever since.  Orphaned at the tender age of nine (and unfortunately killed off Point Horror style at the tender age of, I’m guessing 16), turned down for a scholarship and forced to work in his Uncle’s shoe shop we didn’t get to see much of him as he “moved to California” aka snuffed it before chapter two!  Although this was not revealed until the end.

I feel we missed out on a decent Point Horror boy here as he was cruelly taken away from us!

Dylan Rourke blue eyed, devilish and shrewed with a square honest face and a trail of freckles on his nose that had been broken twice and leaned to the right.  An employee as janitor at the hospital and classmate of Duffy.  He was the total opposite of Kit and struggled for good grades.  He had recently broken up with Amy and basically fancied the pants off Duffy.  I liked Dylan….he can run after my runaway wheel chair and save me any day!

And last but my no means least Smith Lewis!  An orderly at the hospital and I think he was meant to be our Point Horror hunk!  With his eyes the colour of root beer, sexy proud walk (which Duffy found arrogant), thick straight hair, practical jokes and black sports car he apparently sent pulses racing where ever he went and his catch phrase “You think I’m adorable right?” made me want to grab the sick bucket!  I’ve been watching this years big brother whilst reading this book and all I could picture was Marco!  Help Me!  I think I have caught Duffy’s fever!

Marco-Pierre-White-Jr-feature-300x400

The Girls

Blue eyed Amy Severn a junior volunteer at the hospital and of course classmate of Duffy.  She was kind and helpful with her blond hair perfect and sprayed so much into place it looked like plastic and her preppy clothes which included plaid skirts and sweaters she was a quiet and dutiful student and made it quite clear that looking at patients charts was illegal in Twelvetrees hospital!  She had cruelly been dumped by Dylan and gave Duffy’s the evil’s inbetween smiles and patient care of course.

Best friend Jane Sabatini was described as breathtakingly beautiful with thick dark lashes, dark curly hair, heart shaped face, perfectly flawless ivory skin, almost violet eyes and perfectly arched brows.  And yay for another overweight not skinny fab Point Horror character!  I loved Jane!  I wish she had featured a little more.  I mean she walked up four flights of stairs just to bring Duffy some magazines and ran errands for her when she had been running errands all morning with no questions asked.  A true friend indeed.

In fact I’m starting her own hashtag on twitter – #GIVEJANESABATINIHEROWNPOINTHORROR !

And last and most intentionally least we have junior volunteer and so determined to get into medical school that she TOUCHED AND MIXED UP THE PATIENT CHARTS FOR THE MAN WHO OWNED THE HOSPITAL, Cynthia Boon!  With she straight sandy hair, pale eyes, full mouth, shiny skin and tension lines she was described as ambitious and energetic and a KILLER!!  She killed off poor Kit after he discovered that she killed off Mr Latham who funded the hospital with as many wooden wheelchairs as possible and then because she killed Kit in the middle of the night in Duffy’s hospital room she had to kill Duffy next!  You have to feel sorry for her a little bit…..she was given a classic Point Horror ending and was sprayed in the eyes with bug spray and stabbed herself in her face with a hypordermic needle and then shoved on a slate in the morge!

Fashion Faux Pas

I spotted a few…..

Too tight Bermuda shorts over an oversized hot pink sweatshirt and hot pink bow!

And best of all…..Jane wearing lime green pedal pushers and a hot pink short-sleeved t shirt with the slogan, GO AHEAD MAKE MY DAY GIVE ME A CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE!

Get me one now!

Dialogue Disasters

Here’s some lines that made me giggle…..

“Residents of the town of Twelvetrees, Maine, had often remarked sourly that it was not the sort of look a hospital established to welcome the sick and ailing should have”

The obviously had not been inside Twelvetrees hospital….it was far worse than the outside!

“Had it been someone out in the hall doing something useful with the old metal bedpans?”

*sniggers*

“Dr’s were supposed to be balding or grey”

Duffy has never watched Casualty or Holby City then?  Or even visited Hollyoaks?!

“He might look like an ad for a physical fitness magazine, but there was a lot more to Dylan then brawn”

Any volunteers to answer this?

“Sensing that Duffy would rather spend valuable visiting time with her friends, her parent didn’t stay long”

Oh there’s a surprise!

“I wish we could come more often.  I worry about you every minute.  But it’s tax time, honey, and you know what that’s like”

I sense Duffy’s parents are LIARS!

“What you need is a man in your life.  Someone to take you out to a funny movie or dancing”

Firstly no Amy!  No!  And secondly I’m surprised Cynthia didn’t bump Amy off for saying this to her!

“What was Amy shaving with?  A power saw?”

All the lol’s!

“No one will ever be able to tell that you were dead before the car ever went off the road”

This was pre CSI so I will forgive Cynthia for this comment!

Body Count

2!  One pre the book starting and one in front of our very noses!

Is it scary?

Hmmmmmm not really.  I mean this was no Stiney Phirana Pit was it?!  Other than the fact there was not a squirt of hand gel in sight in that hospital which was scary enough and the clear breaches of patient care aka changing someones medication in order to bump them off!

Oh!  I did find the whole shower scene a little scary actually I have to be honest….I mean it was kind of violent and horror movie style scary!  It made up for me laughing so hard at the whole wheelchair scene!

*starts laughing again*

*doesn’t stop…ever*

Did the best friend do it?

Hmmmmm not really, but most of the characters in this Point Horror were a confusing hot sweat of friends/classmates/worked or volunteered at the hospital and who liked visiting Duffy more than actually you know…doing there job!

Some Mild Peril?

It’s like PHBC just want me to keep mentioning the runaway wheelchair again!

*laughs*

I think being admitted to a hospital because your ill with a fever and almost falling down a lift shaft, being rolled down a hill in a runaway wheelchair, being attacked when you finally get a shower and having your medication changed could be classed as mild peril don’t you think?

Or was Duffy just overreacting?

Is it any good?

Possibly not the best Diane Hoh offered to the Point Horror brand, but certainly not the worst.  I loved the concept of this one with the unknowing witness to a crime becoming the target and must be killed by any means in a creepy hospital setting, but the various coming and goings of the so called “friends” at every given opportunity and the amount of time Duffy waited and moaned about wanting a shower was a little strung out.  However the “attacks” on Duffy were pure classic Point Horror gold!

Final Thought

Kadunk!

Where college is a scream…

Okay ….so…What’s It All About?

A girl called Danni starts college at Salem and moves into an all girl / no boys allowed dorm on campus and not in Nightmare (Nightingale) Hall as the book title would suggest.

Not in Nightmare Hall!  What?!  Why?!

Who knows!  This is Point Horror!

Anyway after filling out her college campus roommate form as carefully and precise as possible Danni becomes suitemates with Racey Lacey, Mousey Maureen and eventually Moody Margot…basically they get to share a bathroom together and Lacey and Maureen are roommates as are Danni and Margot and basically form the Spice Girls!  Okay okay I’m lying …. turning this story into the formation of the Spice Girls would have been far more interesting!

Wash your mouth out with soap Chelley Toy and get back to the post!

Basically the roommates become BFF’s, but then the roommates begin to take each others things…..like gold sweaters!

OH THE HORROR!

Yes yes I know!  And then, very very very far into the book Danni starts to receive phonecalls and horrible messages….written in lipstick and starts obsessing over her roommate Margot and who could possibly be doing this to her!

Oh the poor little thing!

Pfffftttt don’t feel sorry for poor old Danni!  She was basically attention seeking….oh and on the run for murder!

The Girl

Lion maned, raised by nannies Danni Spelling!

With her honey coloured hair, unusual grey blue eyes (mine are grey blue!), her generous mouth, pale skin the colour of moonlight and her quick temper….. *blank face*

I don’t really know what to say about Danni…her obsessions over her absent roommate where constant and well basically she was just a bit meh and a bit obvious I guess!  Maybe Lacey ruining Danni’s kiss with Jordan pushes her over the edge?

I do have to admit that I laughed rather to much than I probably should have when Danni was scared of a giant hedge rabbit when she was on her date with Jordon and she got stuck in hedge hell!  OMG don’t start me off!  The visions!  THE VISIONS!  *cries with laughter*

2457296098_9e1336ecc0_z

The Love Interest

Okay I guess the love interest was Jordan who was trying so desperately hard to kick his practical joke habit that he just became a bit irrelevant to the whole story! Apparently his presence improved the scenery and impresses girls with the size of his grass (not a joke!).  I give him one thing though….he did give me a good old laugh in the hedges with Danni!  I may have mentioned this above already lol.

Anyway…kicked out of regular halls due to a misunderstanding about partying he lived in The Kennels with muscular pony tailed, wire rimmed glassed Travis and together they basically….well they basically just perv on girls and basically be Hoh’s red herrings!

So many obvious red herrings in this book!

RedHerringBlurb

The Gang

I have to start with Lacey!  OMG!  I loved racey Lacey so so much!  She was the best part of the whole book in my opinion!  The rich smooth skinned girl with a faintly golden glow who lets face it doesn’t mind a bit of a flash by dropping her towel in front of everyone.  I originally wrote down irritating next to her name in my notebook, but I grew to love her so much!  Sharp tonged and wity with shockingly short hair and brown eyes turned up at the corners (?) she won me over with her love of whips, chains, body shop lip gloss and her love for food orgys!

She gave me a good old few chuckles and especially loved that she was the noisy messy roommate!

I mean forget the real reveal at the end of the book!  The biggest shock was racey Lacey figuring it all out and being basically a genius pretending to be clueless and getting drunk!

I also loved her who wants to be normal that’s so boring comment!  You rock Lacey!  I heart you forever and ever!

Now onto Maureen “Mouse” Ross…another character I loved!  Her obsession over the colour brown was just adorable and I loved it when racey Lacey gave her a make over!  Proper BFF’s!  Maureen was clumsy with pale skin, round green eyes, long straight dark hair, tall and with a stubborn upper lip gave the occasional squeak whilst talking to herself.   I loved how along with her lost scared look her glasses were held together with a paper clip.

She basically just didn’t give two hoots!  It made me laugh how she was another obvious red herring with Hoh indicating she had something to hide and with her suitcase spilling open and everything being symmetrical just as described in the prologue!  The perfect red herring…but nope I was not fooled!  I loved her almost as much as Lacey.

And then there’s Margot Hanes the mysterious roommate who turns up late in the middle of the night with unsettling, dark and intense green eyes, a faint dusting of freckles across her nose, soft medium brown hair and a sun tan. Yep you can tell all of that in the dark!  Hoh gives us yet another red herring in that Margot has a secret that she hopes Danni will understand and basically loses it over a gold sweater.  She asks questions that make the others feel stupid and loves Cary Grant.

Little shout out the “Resident Advisor” Kendra Sydney ….oh bless her cotton socks.  Always there in a time of need. The tall, dark, skinny, brown eyed girl with her loose curly hair and patient worn weary expression must have thought her work was cut out for her when Danni kept making her leave her cosy free from fees room!  I almost wanted the reveal to be her!

Fashion Faux Pas

One word!

CASHMERE!

There was lots and lots and lots of cashmere in this book darling don’t you know!  There were short skirts, knee high boots topped with a cashmere top, a cropped lambs wool top with jeans and we must not forget the chin to slippers bathrobe and chartreuse smock at the hairdressers!

The crème de la crème of Point Horror clothing!

I mean the all basically loose it over a gold cashmere sweater!

Dialogue Disasters

“Pale skin the colour of too many days inside a library”

Rude!  I rather like spending time inside library’s *checks skin colour*

“I’m Lacey….As in underwear…as in where did I put my panties?”

On page 4 of this book I knew I was going to love Lacey!

“Sometimes I’m just out of control you know”

Lacey did such a good job of convincing us she was a bit dippy!

“I sound just like one of those mental hospital nurses”

Ponders if Danni is referring to THE ONE SHE KILLED BEFORE GOING ON THE RUN!

“With my luck I’ll probably get the psycho roommate from hell!”

Danni tries to throw us off the scent!

“The Dungeon?  Whips?  Chains?  This school is definitely my kind of place”

OMG!  I loved Lacey!

“Lots of people are shy Maureen.  You just have to practise.  With practise anybody can act normal!”

Probably best Maureen doesn’t take Danni’s advise here…..just saying!

“If you could order a guy off the menu, any guy who would it be?”

Danni is eyeing up her next victim Hannibal style!

“You know how they say, think globally, act locally?”

Erm….no Lacey….I don’t know…not at all!  Just me?

“Margot went nuclear”

BOOM!

“My roommate is crazy!”

Nice red herring there Danni but you didn’t have the Point Horror Book Club fooled!

“Terrif”

Lacey gives me my new Point Horror saying!  Will it catch on?

“Listen, I’ve got to motor”

Oh Lacey Lacey Lacey and her little catchphrases! Lol VROOOMMMM

“I never had a guy calling me up like that.  Like that movie, Fatal Attraction”

Hide you’re bunnies from Lacey!

“Only you could turn a trip to the post office into a potential horror story!”

Have they never licked a stamp and got a paper cut!

“I was hoping to shake hands with some mail”

WHAT?!

And finally my best dialogue disaster goes to a character that lived down the hall from the Suitemates, Caren Sanchez.  When she received a care package from home she says about all of the characters…

“Oh My God its a flock of vultures”

*hi fives Caren*

Body Count

1!  And that unfortunately happened off the page before the story started! Boooooooo!

Is it scary?

No! No! No!  I was more scared of the thought that Lacey did not pack any underwear to take with her to the whole of college than of anything that happened in the book!

Did the best friend do it?

We can but dream that racey Lacey, Mousey Maureen or Moody Margot were the reveal, but nope!  We had a confusing in the dark stabby stabby with a letter opener knife reveal of it being Danni!  But what was the reveal anyway?  Nothing had actually happened in the book for there to be a reveal really!

Some Mild Peril?

I’m struggling here!  Killer hedge bunnies maybe?!

Is it any good?

Sorry guys but I didn’t get on too well with this one.  Basically nothing happened in the book!  Nothing!  I can’t even figure out what the actual reveal was in the end!  What was being revealed as well basically nothing happened!

I mean a couple of phone calls and messages written in lipstick yeah…and a torn up cashmere sweater, but basically that’s it!  I think Danni was trying to be a copy cat Jenny from The Babysitter and well basically failed!  No one can beat Jenny on that front!

Was it just me?  I mean I know it was revealed that the MC and narrator was in fact crazy and on the run for murder, but it all felt a little flat and basically everything happened in the last 20 pages.  Up until then it was just a story about a group of friends and not very Point Horror!

I loved the shout out to actual Nightmare Hall and Gisele hanging herself and Linda Carlyle living there and basically where obviously all the action happened!

I had to admit that ending with Margot in the shower made me finish the book with a smile on my face!

Final Thought

*stares into space and blinks for half an hour trying to still figure out what the reveal was*

Over to you!

As well as your thoughts on the book I’ve added some fun questions to ponder!

  • Why was this book taken out of Nightmare Hall?
  • The Boy Next Door or The Roommate?!
  • What do you hide in your draw that you would not like touched!
  • What basically happened in this book?!

I admit I struggled to come up with any questions this month as my mind is blank!

The Tagline

She has returned….from the dead!

Okay ….so…What’s It All About?

Oh the poor students of Philippa Moore Senior High School in Lakeside are suffering due to their school not being air conditioned!  Oh the horror!  So bunking off school is a must!  Whilst Megan is planning her sweet sixteenth party her friends have a terrible accident!

An Accident?

Yep!  A car loses control and three of Megan’s friends end up in hospital!  Whatever could have happened to them?!  And this is just the first of many strange terrifying accidents that occur!  And when Megan find drawings predicting who will be next in true Final Destination style it gets serious!

Drawings that show the next victim?!  Oh No!

Yep!  Not any old drawings either!  They were top notch sought after art….drawn in Crayola crayons don’t you know!  Drawings that have the meanings of names!  I present the evidence….a drawing with a cap and a pea = Cappie!  And a drawing of a hill = Hill!  And the crème de la crème of charade drawings a Bar and a Bee = Barbie!  Just genius really!  I’m just jealous!

*adds into my current wip!*

What kind of twisted mind would draw such a sick pictures about a tragic accidents?!

Oh maybe just the ghost that appears in Megan’s mirror and asks to swap bodies for a week!  Just a day in the life of good old kind hearted Megan!

Ghostly apparitions and body swaps!  Woah did Dove from The Perfume return?!

Dove from The Perfume would have had a field day with our ghosty in The Accident, Juliet.   After dying in a accident many years previously she appears in Megan’s mirror as they share the same birthday!  Poor old Juliet died before her sweet sixteen party and wants one last chance to live for a week so basically wants to use Megan’s body to do so!

WHAT?!  IS SHE CRAZY!  I bet Megan told her to go and visit the new Ghostbuster movie set instead of bothering her!

Ermmmm…nope….nope she didn’t….she kindly offers to help Juliet!

Dum dum dum!

The Girl

Oh Megan!  Megan with her hair as dark as crows wings , oval face and sea green eyes…..but remember she is shy and quiet so apparently this means she should have plain straight brown hair!

*looks in mirror at my plain, straight brown hair and ponders if I’m shy and quiet……..no comments!*

Always feeling sorry for people got her in a bit of bother when she felt sorry for a ghost in her mirror!  Yep that’s right…good old Megan felt that sorry for the cutey wooty little ghosty that she traded places with her for a week….with almost deadly circumstances!

I found Megan a little typical point horror girlish!  She winged quite a lot and said Oh No in that Point Horror Girl way.  And lets be honest she took being kind hearted a little to far really don’t you think?!

The Love Interest

Justin Carr!  Mr tall and thin like one of the reeds in the shallower coves of the lake.  With gorgeous sandy wavy hair and his grey eyes behind his wire-rimmed glasses!  With a kind heart and open mind….they don’t make these point horror love interests like they used to you know!  A not so typical point horror love interest as instead of the jock we have a kind of funny, geek who is actually quite adorable.  Just me?  I mean being THAT in tune with Megan to be able to communicate with her when she was a ghost was impressive *swoon*.  And personally on the audio book I listened to I thought he was lovely 🙂

He was born ready!

The Ghost!

Advert!

Are you exactly 15 years of age?!

Do you live near a lake?!

Are you open minded and have a kind heart?

Are you some with an imagination and belief that anything is possible?!

Then Juliet will appear in your mirror……poof!

What’s that wispy, shadowy plume appearing in that oval mirror!  It’s so purple and scary and…and….and…..oh it’s only Juliet!  Nothing to be scared of!  She’s only a ghost from the 1930’s come back for a bit of revenge!  Surely no one would fall for her butter wouldn’t melt routine!  Oh Wait!

I kind of liked Juliet’s passion and patience!  Imagine waiting all of those years for someone with the exact match to your advert to finally move into a house near the lake who just happens to be the granddaughter of the step sister who you hated and you drowned because of!  Phew that was mind baffling!  The perfect revenge!

PS….don’t quote me on this but I have an inkling that purple may just be Juliet’s favourite colour if you wanted to by her a dress…it suits her 😉

I also loved how Juliet wasted no time and got it on with Justin, who thought it was Megan and Megan had to watch….this sounds very dodgy indeed!

*Checks that this was a Point Horror I was reading*

The Gang

Drama loving Hillary Bench…..Silly Hilly!  With her thick, straight short blonde hair which was square around her ears in a shining cap she gave me a lot of chuckles (especially on the audio tape!).  I actually kind of liked her a lot…ESPECIALLY HER WARM MARSHMELLOW INSIDE!  Ghosty Juliet trys to push Silly Hilly off the balcony, but I think Silly Hilly must have the best reflexes!  She was wasted in Point Horror and needed in an action movie!

Lets not forget classic Point Horror named friends Jenny Winn, Barbie and Cappie Cabot!  Oh bless them ….they end up in hospital by the end of chapter one missing out on their breakthrough starring roles in a Point Horror Classic!  They had a nice yellow car though….well you can’t have everything can you!

Oh and poor poor short squat moustached, dead eyed Donny Richardson!  Rejected by all the girls in school, Silly Hilly calls him a dweeb, his parents are divorced so apparently his home life stunk and basically was blamed for every accident in the book when he was innocent!  They even accused him of having the personality of a hang nail (?)!  I felt kind of sorry for him….although I did find the perfect picture of him in his pink shirt trying to pull all the ladies 😉

images

Also little mention has to go to sophisticated viper Vicki Deems, in her skin tight sexy red top and black spider eyes spotting men like spotting juicy flys….she’s try to hit on Justin!  The hussy!

Fashion Faux Pas

Megan did love her blue denim shoulder bag…a lot!  She took it everywhere!  Seriously it crops up all over The Accident…I was tempted to give it it’s own category!

il_570xN_397002975_q9xx

Dialogue Disasters

“Sitting in one of the classrooms was like being roasted over hot coals!”

Ouch!  Hot!

“People didn’t laugh at Justin.  People took him seriously”

Seriously?!  The audio tape casting got this description very wrong then…I laughed at him many a time!

“Megan marches to a different drummer”

Which drummer?

“All creative people have their head in the clouds.  Maybe she’ll write a great novel one day”

Yes maybe one day!

“I look like a melted daisy”

What does a melted daisy look like?!

“His alphabet might be missing some of its letters”

*chomps on an D and a Y – MMMM YUMMY!*

“The feeling of being watched slipped over her again, as chilling as a wet sweater”

*shivers*

“Mr Shattuck”

Just me who laughed at this…..yes okay I’m immature!

“Poof?  She would go poof?  And disappear?  Forever?”

You are not getting rid of Juliet that easy Megan – who you gonna call?  Surely they were around in the 90’s!

“You’re all over him like jelly on peanut butter”

Squishy!

“Little Miss Muffet in there pretended to be so sticky-sweet”

I thought little Miss Muffet ate curds and whey?

“Kind of like Cinderella” “Except that you won’t turn into a pumpkin.  You’ll turn into…nothing”

That Juliet could be so mean! *eats pumpkin pie*

“It’s fat white knobs poking her rudely in the back”

Sorry I couldn’t resist!  One of us was going to pick this up!  All the lol’s!

Body Count

Does Juliet count as a dead body?  Well she is dead I guess, but no dead bodies turn up throughout the book!  Although there were a few “accidents”! 🙂

Is it scary?

Hmmmmm not really scary!  But a lot of “accidents” happen to Megan’s friends and family including the normally elusive from Point Horror parents of Megan!  Poor old Connie nearly drowns and Megan’s Dad Thomas falls off a ladder!  And poor Tom, Megans little brother gets run over by a monster truck!

To be honest Juliet turning up in Megan’s mirror was quite comical rather than scary!

Did the best friend do it?

Nope!  It was the crazy ghost lady who you swapped bodies with Megan!  *wags finger*

Some Mild Peril?

I guess Megan’s mom nearly drowning and her brother being hit by a truck is defiantly mild peril!  And Silly Hilly falling off the balcony!  Wow!  Thinking about it Megan got off quite lightly really!?!

Is it any good?

I actually quite liked this….although I found Megan a little whiney at times I just thought the story flowed well and I can forgive some of it’s loop holes and un used characters and predictable end!

The Accident – The Audio Book!

So this month we picked The Accident to read along with listening to the audio book!

The links to some of the audio books on you tube is here

The link to The Accident audio book is here

Well what an experience it was indeed!  I have never laughed so much!

With added synthesizers for added effect which seemed to come on at really inappropriate times!  Highlights for me were the narrator saying “Spooky” and whoever voiced Megan….her “Oh No’s” and gasps had me laughing all the way to work when I had it on in the car.

I read the book first and then listened to the audio afterwards and I have to say I loved Justin far more on the audio that on the page!  He was kind of funny on the audio and had an adorable accident!

And the special sound effects like the car crash, the man going up the ladder and the lake were all added bonuses!

It was a little guilty pleasure!

What did you think?  What were you highlights of the audio book?

Final Thought

Huge shout out to the mall with the hair salon called Cut It Again and the ice cream shop called Lickety-Split where you could order half a gallon of Triple Trouble ice cream!!  #LifeGoals!

Over to you!

As well as your thoughts on the book I’ve added some fun questions to ponder!

  • Give me your best description of a drawing of a name ie A Cap and a Pea = Cappie!
  • What would your advert for ghostly body swaps be?
  • What do you think happened at Megan’s sweet sixteenth?
  • If you could swap bodies with some one for a week who would it be?
  • Give me your best shop name to go in The Accident shopping Mall!

Also Point Horror Book Club member Billy has done it again!  Summing up The Accident in emojis!  And it’s awesome!  Here it is!

They were basically what I was reading and enjoying as a young adult and thanks to the author Juno Dawson, who started #PointHorrorBookClub on her website in 2013, I have started to re-read these books that I used to rush to the shops every weekend and buy and sit for the whole weekend reading.

Are the Point Horror books we loved as a teenager still our favourites on the re-read?  Are you new to Point Horror?  Has our opinion changed?  Are they still as good?  Do they stand up to modern day YA Horror?  Or are they a whole load of cray cray?

Lets find out…

Nightmare Hall: The Silent Scream is book one in the Nightmare Hall series written by Diane Hoh.  This series was unique amongst the off-shoots of point horror as all the books in the Nightmare Hall Series were written by Diane Hoh.

The story for book one of Nightmare Hall is basically a whodunit story based in a fictional university called Salem University.  A group of students, Jess, Ian, Jon, Cath, Linda and Milo who are starting at the university cannot afford to stay on campus so decide to take up digs at Nightingale Hall with old Mrs Coates to be their house mother and Trucker the handy man, but they soon find out that people have nicknamed the house on the hillside Nightmare Hall due to recent events that have taken place there.

The scene and atmosphere of the hall are set up nicely in the prologue at the beginning of the book which gives a chilling back story about a young girl called Giselle McKendrick who committed suicide in her bedroom at Nightingale Hall the bedroom that in present day Jess occupies.  For a point horror book I found this prologue quite disturbingly terrifying.  Even though the prologue is short it has the dramatic chilling impact it needs to set the story off nicely.

The story is told from Jess’s point of view.  Jess is definitely a better example of a point horror character than some point horror characters I have re-read recently.  She is smart, witty and loves pizza (who doesn’t?)! The other students are all different.  You have Jon, the ladies man, Linda, the athlete, Ian, the nice guy, Milo, the geek, Trucker, the handy handy man and Cath who is just Cath but does provide some laughs. When the house mother of Nightingale Hall has a somewhat sporadic accident the new students at Nightingale Hall are determined to be grown up and look after themselves and have a good time whilst doing it.  But thanks to some strange goings on, including a ghostly photograph, things going missing, noises in the night, getting locked in the cellar and a strange worm encounter that would put I’m A Celebrity Get Me out of Here!  to shame there is defiantly something awry in Nightingale Hall.  Jess soon starts to think that maybe Giselle’s death was not a suicide…maybe someone was responsible for her death and is now trying to cover their tracks and kill her in the process!

I have to admit I don’t really remember this book from the first time around in the 90’s.  I obviously had it and read it as it was in my collection upon digging the books out of the shed, but I remembered nothing whatsoever about it.  As far as point horrors go I thought this was pretty good.  I found the reveal in the end a bit guessable, but enjoyed the whole whodunit premise and loved all the spooky, terrifying stumbling blocks Jess and her friends had to contend with and overcome.

There were some rather dated dialogue and some great 90’s references in the book.  For example, Jon dreams of Kim Basinger and orange laces that everyone seemed to have on their trainers (I’m sure these are back in fashion actually?!). So this gave the book quite a retro feel and did make me laugh on a more than a few occasions adding some comedic value to what, as a young reader years ago would never have picked up on.  There were also some big shocking fashion no no’s.  At one point Cath choses to where a pale blue cloud dress (!?) to the Fall Ball….the imagination runs wild with that one and Juno Dawson has put a lovely picture he found of a pale blue cloud dress on her point horror book club page for this book (check it out –  its great but beware of spoilers!)!  I loved the fact that the dating scenes read like a sketch from Made In Chelsea….all dating each other and swapping around who they fancied which again was great fun to read.

All in all I enjoyed the re-read of this book many years after the first time around.  It really is a great addition to the Point Horror Series and one of the top ranking in the re-reads so far.

It would be great to hear if any one else remembers this book or the Point Horror Series in general or if anyone is going to give it a read following this post?  I would love to know what you think so please feel free to leave a comment below using the reply button at the top of the post or send me a message on twitter ( @chelleytoy ).
