The Books And Why We Love Melinda Salisbury

Seventeen-year-old Twylla lives in the castle. But although she’s engaged to the prince, Twylla isn’t exactly a member of the court.

As the Goddess embodied, Twylla instantly kills anyone she touches. Each month she’s taken to the prison and forced to lay her hands on those accused of treason. No one will ever love a girl with murder in her veins. Even the prince, whose royal blood supposedly makes him immune to Twylla’s fatal touch, avoids her company.

But then a new guard arrives, a boy whose easy smile belies his deadly swordsmanship. And unlike the others, he’s able to look past Twylla’s executioner robes and see the girl, not the Goddess. Yet Twylla’s been promised to the prince, and knows what happens to people who cross the queen.

However, a treasonous secret is the least of Twylla’s problems. The queen has a plan to destroy her enemies, a plan that requires a stomach-churning, unthinkable sacrifice. Will Twylla do what it takes to protect her kingdom? Or will she abandon her duty in favour of a doomed love?

You can find my review of The Sin Eater’s Daughter here

Return to the darkly beautiful world of The Sin Eater’s Daughter with a sequel that will leave you awed, terrified . . . and desperate for more. Ever since her brother Lief disappeared, Errin’s life has gone from bad to worse. Not only must she care for her sick mother, she has to scrape together rent money by selling illegal herbal cures. But none of that compares to the threat of the vengeful Sleeping Prince whom the Queen just awoke from his enchanted sleep. When her village is evacuated as part of the war against the Sleeping Prince, Errin is left desperate and homeless. The only person she can turn to is the mysterious Silas, a young man who buys deadly poisons from Errin, but won’t reveal why he needs them. Silas promises to help Errin, but when he vanishes, Errin must journey across a kingdom on the brink of war to seek another way to save her mother and herself. But what she finds splits the world as she knows it apart, and with the Sleeping Prince drawing nearer, Errin must make a heartbreaking choice that could affect the whole kingdom…

The final battle is coming… As the Sleeping Prince tightens his hold on Lormere and Tregellan, the net closes in on the ragged band of rebels trying desperately to defeat him. Twylla and Errin are separated, isolated, and running out of time. The final battle is coming, and Aurek will stop at nothing to keep the throne forever… Explosive, rich and darkly addictive, this is the stunning conclusion to Mel Salisbury’s internationally best-selling trilogy that began with THE SIN EATER’S DAUGHTER

The Scarecrow Queen is the highly anticipated and captivating finale in the internationally bestselling trilogy that began with The Sin Eater’s Daughter. Published by Scholastic 2 March 2017.

Tales Events – The Sleeping Prince Birmingham Launch

Sleeping PrinceOn Friday 5th February 2016 Waterstones Birmingham had extra special royalty attend their wonderful store!

IMG_0106( Photo above with thanks to @_itslauren_JLS )

The wonderful Melinda Salisbury decided to have not one, but two launches to celebrate the release of The Sleeping Prince and held the second launch in Birmingham which I was so over the moon to be able to attend!

Sleeping PrinceThe Sleeping Prince is the second book in the Sin Eaters Daughter Trilogy and is AMAZING!

You can check out my review of The Sleeping Prince here

So the setting was set.  Deep on the history level of Waterstones the always wonderful bookseller extraordinaire Jamie started the evening off giving Mel a huge big welcome.

ms2

Mel entered the room and settled down and I did a little snigger that behind her were books about Richard III (her love) and Henry VII (her enemy).

ms3

Although they were not holding her books like the examples below that myself and the hubby had a great amount of fun using Photoshop with!

ms20

ms21

We were all given the chance to get our frustrations out and were permitted to heckle and boo Mel for certain things that happen in both The Sin Eater’s Daughter and The Sleeping Prince, but we were all far too polite and possibly in too much awe of such a wonderful writer.  In case we did decide to boo, Mel had a huge bottle of readers tears aka wine on hand!

So the event started and the lovely Mel looked beautiful in her crown.

ms4ms5

The event was brilliant and Jamie had some brilliant questions up her sleeve as always.  Mel spoke about The Sin Eater’s Daughter, The Sleeping Prince, myths and fairy tales and her inspirations including Mel’s experiences whilst travelling.

One things that Mel said really stuck in my mind…she said sometimes its good to go a different route home from school or work or get off that bus a stop earlier or later and walk to your destination.  The world is full of inspiration and it’s good to explore.

Mel also mentioned how she has written a couple of short stories with the history of some of the back stories in the books like The Sleeping Prince and The Bringer more for herself so she could write the main books, but it was agreed by everyone in the room that we need these books to be published asap!

*bats eyelashes at Scholastic*

ms6

ms7

Mel also read from The Sleeping Prince….from the prologue!  Yes indeed!

ms9

ms8

It was then the audiences turn to ask questions and there were quite a few questions to be asked.  One particular question was about book three.  Mel kept quite tight lipped, but we all have a horrible feeling that she is plotting to kill off probably our favourite characters!  She had that look on her face.

It was interesting to hear that the synopsis for book three had been sent off to Scholastic for approval and also that the start and the end of this trilogy has been set in stone and planned by Mel from day one and it’s not changed.  I’m both amazed and scared about this prospect!  I’m sure she has plans to destroy us all emotionally!

Another fab question was about what she is going to write after the trilogy is complete.  Mel told us that in down time between writing The Sin Eater’s Daughter trilogy she has started something and from what she has described it sounds awesome!  I’m hoping that it gets published so much!

*crosses fingers*

( Photo above with thanks to @WaterstonesBham )

Once the time for the signing came it was time for Mel to dig out the wax seal!  That’s right!  Waterstones literally let Mel play with fire.  After using gold wax at her first launch in London (and setting Samantha Shannons book on fire) we had complete faith that she was now a pro at this.  Using silver wax for this launch we all couldn’t wait for Mel to get signing!

( Photo above with thanks to @WaterstonesBham )

It was also fab to see some friends at the event.  It feels like it’s been too long since I last saw some of these beautiful faces.  Here’s a few…

IMG_0098It was then time for a well earned glass of wine and of course to give Mel her little launch present that I brought for her.  I forgot to take a picture of it but basically it was a tote bag with her two books printed on each side 🙂

It was a really fab night!  I had so much fun!

Thanks Waterstones Birmingham for hosting such a fab event and a huge thank you and congratulations to my lovely friend and wonderful author Melinda Salisbury!

One amazing lady!

I originally received a proof of this book from the wonderful people at Love Reading 4 Kids followed by a finished copy from the publisher Scholastic.  This was then followed by me buying several copies of this book!  This does not affect my review or my opinions in any way and am delighted to write an honest review.  Thank you all for sending / giving this to me to read!

** Please note Tales Of Yesterday Reviews are written as spoiler free as possible**

Reading fantasy is normally really out of my comfort zone, but Melinda Salisbury’s debut, The Sin Eater’s Daughter, about a girl who can kill with a single touch, drew me into a world full of imagination, corruption and love and it hasn’t let me go ever since.

The Sin Eater’s Daughter tells the story of Twylla.  Twylla is the daughter of the Kingdom’s Sin Eater who eats peoples sins in the form of food when they die.  Brought to the Kingdom of Lormere by the King and the evil Queen she it betrothed to Prince Merek (*swoons*), but is also the perfect weapon with the Queen advising her Kingdom that Twylla has been chosen by the Gods to be Daunen Embodied and can kill anyone with a single touch.  This is proved to the Kingdom by Twylla drinking the Morningsbane poison every harvest proving that the Gods have chosen her.  Under the constant protection of her guards, including new guard Lief from the enemies town Tregellan (*swoons*), Twylla starts to question the Queens motives and reasoning’s behind the executions that Twylla is asked to perform and in the process learns to love.

I instantly connected with this world and it’s characters.  I could actually imagine this world being part of our past and history.  It felt very real to me as if these moments in history had actually taken place in the past.  This entangled with a fairy-tale-esque world made me envision everything so clearly and it gave me the feelings of being a child and reading the fairy tales of old and being swept away by them completely.

I loved Twylla as a character.  Melinda Salisbury does a fantastic job, which is credit to her writing, of making you feel exactly what Twylla does.  You feel her pain of having to perform these executions, you feel her fear of the Queen, you feel every little tummy flip and every torn thought in her mind.  I felt for her completely and as a reader I wanted the best for her.

On the other side of the coin you have the Queen.  Within the first few pages my tummy filled with fear.  Her presence, even when she is only suggested and spoke about on the page, made me cower in fear and for what was going to happen next.  She is so cold, calculating and really quite heartless.  One scene that sticks fully in my mind and made me realise just what the Queen was like happened very early on in the book when a court member dares to speak over Twylla singing during a banquet (and possibly a little out of turn) so much so that the Queen takes a dislike to it.  Quite calmly and casually the Queen tells him to leave by foot through the woods that surround the castle.  She gives him a head start and then asks the guards to send the viscous dogs after him casually as if she is asking someone to pour more wine or batting a fly away.  Oh she is so evil!

*runs away scared*

Amongst all of this there’s also a very swoon worthy love triangle in the mix.  There’s the gorgeous new guard Lief who is as much mysterious as he is handsome and Prince Merek who is devoted to his Kingdom and his betrothed, Twylla.  Melinda Salisbury writes some very very swoony scenes indeed which made my cheeks flush red and made me fall deeply in love with both of these characters.  I don’t want to give too much away so I will leave it there but at an event I attended with Melinda she mentioned that she would cast these two actors in a movie / TV adaptation….

Reeve+Carney+65th+Annual+Tony+Awards+Arrivals+u_tL0caMNhLlaneurin-barnard*Daydreams*

Oh sorry……better get back to the review!

One of my favourite scenes has to be the Hall Of Mirrors….It was just so cleverly crafted and written I felt like I was there, hiding and trying not to be seen.

I also loved the threads of story Melinda Salisbury has threaded into the mix in a very clever way indeed.  The story of The Sin Eaters Daughter lead me to question things happening in this fictional world with a massive twist along the way and left me craving…no actually demanding more!

The title of the next book in the series is called The Sleeping Prince.  Thinking back after hearing this title made me realise aspects of the fictional history that Melinda Salisbury has created about the Sleeping Prince throughout The Sin Eaters Daughter make this a highly anticipated read for 2016!

(You can check out my review of The Sleeping Prince here)

I highly recommended The Sin Eaters Daughter to anyone who enjoys fantasy, brilliant characters, a fearful villain, clever plot twists, brilliant writing and swoony love interests.

Oh and also I’m definitely team Lief *swoons*….. I mean Merek *swoons* …. I mean….Oh I just can’t choose….maybe both?

I award this book 5 out of 5 Tales Of Yesterday Books!

I loved this book that much and even though it was the last book I read in 2015 it made my best 15 books read in 2015 list here

About Melinda Salisbury

61PhhkALyfL__UX250_

Melinda Salisbury lives by the sea, somewhere in the south of England. As a child she genuinely thought Roald Dahl’s Matilda was her biography, in part helped by her grandfather often mistakenly calling her Matilda, and the local library having a pretty cavalier attitude to the books she borrowed. Sadly she never manifested telekinetic powers.

She likes to travel, and have adventures. She also likes medieval castles, non-medieval aquariums, Richard III, and all things Scandinavian. The Sin Eater’s Daughter is her first novel, and will be published by Scholastic in 2015. She is represented by the amazing Claire Wilson at Rogers, Coleridge and White.

Tales Events – An Evening With Melinda Salisbury March 2015

51yyKJWEEVL__SX324_BO1,204,203,200_

On the 5th of March I had the absolute pleasure of attending an event at Waterstones Birmingham High Street…it was a book talk and signing with Melinda Salisbury author of The Sin Eaters Daughter!

You can find my review of The Sin Eater’s Daughter here

Now I have met Mel a few times before and she is awesome (check out one time at the Scholastic Blogger Brunch here )!  I feel we have become friends through twitter and meeting up at a few previous events and as this was her first book shop event I wanted to come and show my support for this wonderful, lovely lady!

Waterstones did a fab job of laying out lots of copies of The Sin Eaters Daughter for us to buy….so much so that even though I already have a copy I bought another one!

P1200315P1200321

IMG_3471P1200317

Mel turned up at the event early and immediately started to interact with everyone that had turned up to see her, not wanting to make a grand entrance, but just mingle and relax…this was awesome and so refreshing and gave the evening a very personal feel which was lovely.

P1200323

During this time myself and Mel swapped presents…Mel gave me a fab The Sin Eaters Daughter necklace and I gave her a mug with a picture of The Sin Eaters Daughter on and….well basically a picture of Mel holding her book!  I got the impression Mel was more chuffed at having her face on the mug than her actual book!  🙂

IMG_3470

IMG_3450IMG_3451

Now the seating at Waterstones was laid out traditionally, as normal, in rows all facing the big comfy leather chairs that the author normally sits in to face the audience.  That was until Mel changed EVERYTHING!  Making the event even more personal and with a comfy feel we all moved the chairs into a semi circle around the authors chair.  It was a brilliant idea and far more intimate…just perfect!

P1200322

And so the event began!  Mel read her favourite extract from the middle of the book!  I had never heard her read before and it was so relaxing and soothing the way Mel told the story…I defiantly am booking Mel to read me bedtime stories…recommended for a good nights sleep 🙂

IMG_3473

We then got to hear some fab stories including a little about Mel’s life pre writing the book.  Even with some of Mel’s family members in the audience she opened up and was brutally honest it was endearing!  I loved the fact that upon asking the audience who had not read The Sin Eaters Daughter yet to ensure no spoilers were given away during the talk her own brother put his hand up and confessed he hadn’t read it yet!  I think Mel was plotting revenge for this act of treason later!

P1200324P1200325

Jamie from Waterstones did a fantastic job with the questions she posed to Mel!  We got to hear about how Mel likes to write….in her pyjamas in bed, who she would cast in a movie of The Sin Eaters Daughter with one character from the book Merek being the gorgeous Aneurin Barnard and about travelling and how people should get out there and travel as much as they can.  Mel also spoke briefly about how she is writing book 2 and how she has control over her world in The Sin Eaters Daughter with a cryptic message…I’m sorry!  *cries at what this could possibly mean*

All in all fantastic questions!

P1200327P1200328

P1200330P1200332

We then got to hear Mel read from the start of the book…*plays lullaby music and listens to soothing story telling voice*

Then onto the audience Q&A!  It was met a little by silence to begin with so I thought I would break the ice and ask Mel if there were any songs that influenced the book or that she could relate to The Sin Eaters Daughter.

This was her answer.  Perfect!

A few more questions were then asked and Mel answered them all.

Now I thought I was being a good friend by buying another copy of Mel’s wonderful book…so to get this dedication whilst having the book signed….well just how rude….

IMG_3475

Okay okay….maybe I deserved it just a teeny weeny iccle bit….okay maybe a lot!  You see during the Q&A a question to beat all questions popped into my head!  Some of you may be aware that Mel is a huge fan of King Richard III and Sirius Black from Harry Potter…..so I thought I would be a bit Slytherin of me …. actually I should probably think before I speak and not just say the first thing that pops into my head!

(Note to all other authors….I only asked this as I know Mel and I knew she would find it funny and take it on the chin…please don’t fear my questions lol)

The question I asked was this…

Who would you snog, marry, avoid out of – Richard III, Siruis Black and Aneurin Barnard!

article-2273703-175BA468000005DC-44_634x434images

aneurin-barnard
Mel recoiled in horror!

P1200333
Of course I didn’t make her answer it…I was only joking…I mean I couldn’t be that cruel!  He He He

Then it was time for the signing and again Mel being Mel did things a little differently and it was fab!  Instead of sitting at the normal signing table Mel pulled up a comfy chair and took time to chat to us all individually whilst signing our books!  And when I say chat I mean chat.  There was no pressure or rushing to get to the next person.  Mel chatted to everyone for as long as they wanted!  So lovely!

P1200335P1200336

It was also lovely to have time to chat to other bloggers or people I have met on twitter recently….thanks for all being awesome!

All in all it was a fantastic evening and Mel did such a fab job considering it was her first bookshop event!  She was relaxed, fun, confident and friendly.  Everything and more that you could ask one of your favourite authors to be!

This is the Mel I have come to know and love!

A fantastic lady through and through!

Thanks for being you Mel!  Your awesome!

P1200338

Oh and for those of you wondering….I did get revenge for my comment in my book signed by Mel.

May I present to you my son, Corey….waving a flag….a Henry VII flag *evil laugh*
