The Books and Why We Love Juno Dawson

Fiction

Something wicked this way comes…

She thought she’d be safe in the country, but you can’t escape your own nightmares, and Lis London dreams repeatedly that someone is trying to kill her.

Lis thinks she’s being paranoid – after all who would want to murder her? She doesn’t believe in the local legends of witchcraft. She doesn’t believe that anything bad will really happen to her. You never do, do you? Not until you’re alone in the woods, after dark – and a twig snaps…

Hollow Pike – where witchcraft never sleeps.

One year after the suicide of their friend Janey, the rest of the group decide to spend the summer together in a holiday villa in the Mediterranean. They’re hoping to get over the terrible events of the previous year, but then a new guest arrives, claiming to have evidence that Janey’s suicide was actually murder. When the guest is found dead, it becomes clear that the killer must be one of the group – but who is it? And will they strike again?

A compelling psychological thriller – with a dash of romance.

Drip…drip…drip… In five days, she will come…

Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Rowe is not the kind of person who believes in ghosts. A Halloween dare at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal, especially when her best friend Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in too. They are ordered to summon the legendary ghost of Bloody Mary: say her name five times in front of a candlelit mirror, and she shall appear… But, surprise surprise, nothing happens. Or does it?

Next morning, Bobbie finds a message on her bathroom mirror – five days – but what does it mean? And who left it there? Things get increasingly weird and more terrifying for Bobbie and Naya, until it becomes all too clear that Bloody Mary was indeed called from the afterlife that night, and she is definitely not a friendly ghost. Bobbie, Naya and Caine are now in a race against time before their five days are up and Mary comes for them, as she has come for countless others before… A truly spine-chilling yet witty horror from ‘Queen of Teen’ author Juno Dawson.

Meet Molly Sue. Once she’s under your skin there’s no getting rid of her…

Seventeen-year-old Sally Feather is not exactly a rebel. Her super-conservative parents and her treatment at the hands of high school bullies means that Sally’s about as shy and retiring as they come – but all that’s about to change. Accidentally ending up in the seedier side of town one day, Sally finds herself mysteriously lured to an almost-hidden tattoo parlour – and once inside, Sally is quickly seduced by its charming owner, Rosita, and her talk of how having a secret tattoo can be as empowering as it is thrilling. Almost before she knows what she is doing, Sally selects sexy pin-up Molly Sue, and has her tattooed on her back – hoping that Molly Sue will inspire her to be as confident and popular as she is in her dreams.

But things quickly take a nightmareish turn. Almost immediately, Sally begins to hear voices in her head – or rather, one voice in particular: Molly Sue’s. And she has no interest in staying quiet and being a good girl – in fact, she’s mighty delighted to have a body to take charge of again. Sally slowly realises that she is unable to control Molly Sue… and before long she’s going to find out the hard way what it truly means to have somebody ‘under your skin’.

A funny and moving love story about friends, first loves and self-discovery by the Queen of Teen 2014.

When sixteen-year-old Toria Bland arrives at her new school she needs to work out who her friends are, all in a crazy whirl of worry, exam pressure and anxiety over fitting in. Things start looking up when Toria meets the funny and foul-mouthed Polly, who’s the coolest girl Toria has ever seen. Polly and the rest of the ‘alternative’ kids take Toria under their wing. And that’s when she meets the irresistible Nico Mancini, lead singer of a local band – and it’s instalove at first sight! Toria likes Nico, Nico likes Toria . . . but then there’s Polly. Love and friendship have a funny way of going round in circles.

An exclusive World Book Day story from UK Queen of Teen Juno Dawson. Avery has always suffered at the hands of bullies, so when she’s given a seemingly-miraculous opportunity to join the ‘A-list’ she grabs at it with both hands. But appearances can be deceiving, and soon Avery’s not so sure she likes this new version of herself. And it’s only by overcoming her fears that she can learn the true meaning of being comfortable in your own skin.

Fliss’s mum needs peace and quiet to recuperate from a long illness, so they both move to the countryside to live with Margot, Fliss’s stern and bullying grandmother. Life on the farm is tough and life at school is even tougher, so when Fliss unearths Margot’s wartime diary, she sees an opportunity to get her own back.

But Fliss soon discovers Margot’s life during the evacuation was full of adventure, mystery . . . and even passion. What’s more, she learns a terrible secret that could tear her whole family apart . . .

Please note this book is due for release on the 26th January and can be pre ordered here

Spotlight – The Tapper Twins by Geoff Rodkey

TapperTwinscompetition3.jpg

I have recently been sent The Tapper Twins books by the wonderful Orion Children’s Books!  These were immediately pinched off me by my ten year old and I have heard many giggles coming from his room whilst reading them!  I cannot wait to pinch them back soon!

Today I have a fab giveaway!

To celebrate the release of the second book in the series, The Tapper Twins Tear Up New York the lovely people at Orion Children’s Books have given me not one but two prizes to giveaway!

They even made me this fab header!

So firstly a bit about these fab books……

About The Books

9781444014990

Two kids. One pastry. This means WAR! The first in a hilarious new series from a multi-talented US author and screenwriter.

Wars are terrible things. I know this because I’ve read about a lot of them on Wikipedia. And also because I was just in one. It was me against my brother, Reese. That might not sound like a war to you. Trust me. It was.

This is the story of the terrible war between twins, Reese and Claudia Tapper.

It began with a cruel and senseless sneak attack in the school cafeteria on Monday, September 8th, at approximately 8:27 a.m. Or possibly it began in the Tapper family kitchen, earlier that morning, with the greedy guzzling of the last brown sugar cinnamon toaster pastry. What really happened? It depends on who you speak to . . .

9781444015010 (1)

One day. One city. One scavenger hunt, and one GRAND PRIZE. This can only mean one thing . . . WAR! The second in the hilarious series from Geoff Rodkey, a successful US screenwriter.

This is the true oral history of the First (and last) Annual Culvert Prep Middle School Scavenger Hunt. You shouldn’t believe what you read in the New York Post. All of that was completely made up. Well, most of it. Read on to discover what happened on the day the Tapper Twins and their friends (and enemies) were let loose on New York City. . .

Claudia: Honestly, I think Mrs. Bevan overreacted. Nobody actually filed a lawsuit. Those were just empty threats.

Reese: All I can say is, none of the bad stuff that happened was my fault. Most of the laws we broke, I didn’t even know were laws. So those shouldn’t count.

Fans of DIARY OF A WIMPY KID and DARCY BURDOCK – smart, funny 9-12 fiction!

Guest Post – The Dead House Mirror Tour by Dawn Kurtagich

51wE3g64lCL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_

Today I am over the moon to be part of The Dead House Mirror Tour!  Carly is one of the main characters in The Dead House and today I bring you her reactions to horror scenes!

But that’s not all!

As the tag line suggests…Carly gets the day. Kaitlyn gets the night!

*evil laugh*

Check out fab U.S blogger www.onceuponatwilight.com for Kaitlyn’s reactions to horror scenes bringing two sides of this blog post to life as part of The Dead House mirror tour!

The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich was released on the 6th August 2015 in the UK (published by Orion Childrens Books) and in September in the US  and is set to be one creepy read!  And we all know I like a creepy read right?!

I am THAT excited about this book I wrote a spotlight post previously where Dawn kindly shared a scary teaser – here

I also featured on The Dead House audio tour with a creepy audio reading from the book – here

So what’s The Dead House all about……

index

Twenty-five years ago, Elmbridge High School burned down. The blaze killed three and injured twenty, and one pupil, Carly Johnson, disappeared. For two decades, little was revealed about what became known as the Johnson Incident.

Until now.

A diary has been found in the ruins of the school. In this diary, Kaitlyn Johnson, Carly’s twin, tells of the strange and disturbing sequence of events leading to the incident.

But Kaitlyn doesn’t exist. She never has.

Chilling, creepy and compelling, THE DEAD HOUSE is one of those very special books that finds all the dark places in your imagination, and haunts you long after you’ve finished reading.

Debut author Dawn Kurtagich masterfully weaves together a thrilling and terrifying story using psychiatric reports, witness testimonials, video footage, and the discovered diary – and as the mystery grows, the horrifying truth about what happened that night unfolds.

Famous Horror Scenes – What would Carly do?

Scene 1: Rosemary’s Baby Revealed

1f51a930030b76563667967fac4ece76

When Rosemary becomes pregnant (by nefarious means) things start to take a turn for the worse. She finds herself completely isolated from everything she once knew and her nosy neighbors, the Castevets, practically run her life. Rosemary’s paranoia increases and her worst fears are brought to a diabolical climax after she gives birth and realizes the truth about her son and the Castevets’ creepy circle of friends. Hint: it’s all in the eyes.” ~ quote

Carly: No. I don’t want to see this! The delay is exquisite, I’ll admit that. And I’m terrified to—No, Rosemary! Don’t look in the bassinet! If I were in her place, I don’t think I could do any different. Maybe I could keep from looking . . . But she looked! And his eyes . . . What have you done to his eyes! I can’t stomach it—I’m going to stop watching now.

Scene 2: Samara Crawls Out of the TV

321323_1257104782891_full

As the duo begins to finally unravel the mystery of ‘The Ring,’ Noah gets an unexpected visit from the videotape’s star Samara. The creepy girl climbs out of the well and begins to walk toward the camera shooting the footage — which is spooky enough given her straggly hair and oddly-jointed gait. It becomes even more disturbing when she comes through the television screen and into Noah’s apartment.”~ quote

Carly: This scene terrifies me. I keep imaging Samara coming out of the TV at night, when Kaitlyn is around. I keep thinking: I saw the tape, just like Noah did. Just like they all did. And I haven’t made a copy. She’ll get Kaitlyn—and it’s my fault! I want to show Kaitlyn, to make sure she sees, but she’d laugh if she knew I was scared of a TV. Okay—switch it off, please.

Scene 3: Hellraiser Box Solve

hellraiser2

Kirsty (Ashley Laurence), having been assaulted by the skinless, reanimated corpse of her uncle, is spending some alone time in a hospital room. Her doctor, who hasn’t believed a word of her story, leaves her the ornate box she was found clutching for dear life in the hope that it will jog her memory. It doesn’t, but it does occupy her time once she realizes it’s a puzzle box. What happens when she solves the puzzle, however, is even worse than when her skinless uncle tried to make out with her. ~ quote

Carly: It’s like they bring it on themselves! She’s touching the box and she’s going to open it—and here it comes. Oh, god—why?! This is like Pandora’s box on steroids. The walls opening is disgusting and terrifying! And, of course, because she’s so curious, she walks towards the creepy gap in the wall with an endless corridor… makes complete sense. THINGS ARE SCREAMING AND SHE’S STILL WALKING FORWARD!!! Okay, the scorpion-human thing chased her but she’s “safely” back in her hospital room and the scorpion thing can be heard on the other side of the wall. I need to stop watching this right now. The glowing brick edges were enough. And bargaining with demons . . . never a good idea. Okiedokie… I need to go find a warm fluffy blanket and a good dose of F.R.I.E.N.D.S now. Bye…

About Dawn Kurtagich

71rLfwMrUBL._UX250_

Dawn Kurtagich is a writer of creepy, spooky and psychologically sinister YA fiction, where girls may descend into madness, boys may see monsters in men, and grown-ups may have something to hide. Her debut YA novel, The Dead House, is forthcoming from Orion/Indigo (UK) and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (US) in 2015.

By the time she was eighteen, she had been to fifteen schools across two continents. The daughter of a British globe-trotter and single mother, she grew up all over the place, but her formative years were spent in Africa–on a mission, in the bush, in the city and in the desert.

She has been lucky enough to see an elephant stampede at close range, a giraffe tongue at very close range, and she once witnessed the stealing of her (and her friends’) underwear by very large, angry baboons. (This will most definitely end up in a book . . . ) While she has quite a few tales to tell about the jumping African baboon spider, she tends to save these for Halloween!
