The 4th June 2015 marked the release day of the third book in the Jessica Cole Model Spy Series – Catwalk Criminal by author Sarah Sky published by Scholastic. I am very excited to have been sent a copy of this book so I could read and review as part of the blog tour to celebrate it’s release!

I have previously read the first in the series Jessica Cole Model Spy: Code Red Lipstick (you can find my review here ) and the second Jessica Cole Model Spy: Fashion Assassin (you can find my review here ) and thoroughly enjoyed them so I was so happy and excited for this next instalment!

Thank you to both Scholastic and Faye Rogers for having me on this wonderful tour.

Ps – There’s also an awesome tour giveaway where you could win a set of the trilogy….I highly recommend you enter at the bottom of this post 🙂

Models, spies and lipstick gadgets in this fast-paced teen series. Jessica Cole has been recruited to Westwood, MI6’s secret division of supermodel spies. Her first official mission seems simple at first, until it turns into the biggest cyber-attack ever known, threatening the security of the whole country. Then it emerges there is a traitor in the midst at MI6 – and suddenly Jessica herself is being accused. With no one believing her innocence, and the country on the verge of chaos, Jessica has no choice but to take matters of national security into her own hands and catch the culprit – fresh from the catwalk.

** Please note Tales Of Yesterday Reviews are written as spoiler free as possible**

Wow!  Super spy Jessica Cole is back with a bang in this third instalment of this brilliant series and I loved every page of it!

This book kicks off six months after the end of the second book, Fashion Assassin, where we join Jessica in an action packed opening in the Shard in London!  Following completing training she is now a full member of Westwood (a secret agency of models who work for MI6) and we join her on her first mission!

Her first mission does not go to plan and puts Jessica in danger and then there’s a cyber attack on MI6 HQ causing mayhem around London….. could there be a mole inside the Westwood camp that wants rid of Jessica?!  What pursues is a race against time to stop a group called The Collective who are working on behalf of the mysterious Liberty Crossing causing mayhem and putting MI6 agents life in danger!

With many twist and turns and action it was impossible for me to put this book down!  Just when I thought I had it sussed Sarah Sky throws another twist or a curve ball to really make you keep guessing what’s going to happen right up till the very end!

As well as being a super spy Jessica has also joined this top secret wing of MI6, Westwood, to find out the truth about her Mom’s death!  I love how this story line has carried through all three books and I was routing for Jessica all along to discover the truth….okay, okay I wanted to know the truth …the pages flew whilst I tried to find out!

The other two books have been set in different countries ie Paris, Monaco, but Catwalk Criminal keeps the action close to home in London.  This, for me as a reader, gave this book a more homely feel.  Whilst I love reading stories set in different countries this just felt right and in a way gave Jessica more depth to her character as we got to see more of her home life, school life, MI6 HQ and personal life.  Which brings us onto a new character that was introduced in this book…..

Zak!

Oh Zak!  The gorgeous Calvin Klein model! *daydreams*  He befriends Jessica and makes her boyfriend Jamie very jealous and her best friend Becky weak at the knees…..apparently he’s very good looking and I adored him!  We are also introduced to a fashion designer Ossa Cosway who Jessica exclusively models for….he is just how I imagine a fashion designer to be.  We also get our fix of model spy regulars Jessica’s Dad, Grandma and MI6 top bloke Nathan!

The struggles and strains of being a super spy / model / teenager really were evident in this instalment of the books where Jessica not only battling cyber threats also has to deal with hiding her life from her best friend and her boyfriend which causes Jessica numerous conflicts….I really felt for her as a character and I think this also cemented, for me, why the setting of London, Jessica’s home, was more fitting for the story.

Favourite parts of the book for me were the action scenes in a boarding school, prison and an old abandoned warehouse!  They were fast paced and had my heart racing!  There was also some funny parts that made me chuckle especially when because of the cyber attacks all the teachers at Jessica’s school end up being put on a website called OAPdating.com and all the pupils at the school are listed on eBay with a starting bid of 1p!  Genius and very funny!

I loved the nods to the previous books and characters like Kat from Fashion Assassin, Allegra Knight and I have to shamefully admit my tummy did a little flip when Margaret was mentioned!  I will say no more, but Sarah Sky does a fantastic job of summarising the first two books and giving the reader a little bit of background / reminder or previous events as well as letting us know what the likes of Kat or Margaret are up to now…..

As always there are super cool and awesome gadgets galore #squee !  My favourite gadgets this time around were Taser trainers!  Want!  A diamante key ring scanner!  Want!  Thermal imaging contact lenses!  Want!  And a lipstick that can cut electricity! *jumps up and down like Verruca Salt and shouts I WANT IT NOW!* 🙂  Such cool gadgets!!!

I have heard this may be the final Jessica Cole book……yep I know right?!  We want more!  *bats eyelids at Sarah Sky and Scholastic*….in all honesty this whole trilogy has been fantastic and I LOVE Sarah Sky’s writing style and stories so I am really excited for what is next to come from this brilliant UKYA writer….whatever it is I will be picking up a copy without a doubt!

I really would recommend this book and the whole trilogy to any one looking for an action packed adventure with a hint of mystery, humour and a kick ass heroine!

If ever I were in trouble I would call Jessica Cole….or if she’s not available definitely Sarah Sky who is a master of Karate and could do some serious damage! *gulps*

Right ….I’m now off to day dream some more about Zak *drools*

** Please note Tales Of Yesterday Reviews are written as spoiler free as possible**

Again, like Code Red Lipstick (the first in the Jessica Cole Series) I will be starting this review off with a huge wow!

Wow!  What a sequel to Code Red Lipstick!  Again this 2nd book in this series had everything!  Jessica remained a strong, cool main character with super cool gadgets, super gorgeous dresses, a trip to Monaco and a super luxury yacht!  What more could I ask for!  I loved every second of reading this book and Sarah Sky pulls you right into the action, danger and suspense with twisty turns, a rich Russian family, some new and old familiar faces and a ghost!

Fashion Assassin moves us six months on from the ending of Code Red Lipstick where we find Jessica has been struggling for modelling work due to her name being tarnished by an MI6 agent with a grudge! With her Dad unwell in hospital and her godfather in a coma Jessica is taking all the modelling jobs she can to help out back home.  She is then blackmailed and forced into a mission that will test her skills and patience!  On the plus side she gets to stay on a luxury Yacht in Monaco !  On the downside she cannot tell her family, boyfriend or best friend that she has accepted this mission to protect them as well as a spoilt brat called Kat who’s gold teethed dad pampers her every need and tells Jessica that some one is threatening to kill Kat! As a matter of national and international security Jessica may be facing her hardest mission yet!  It’s lucky Jessica does not believe in ghosts as she is about to receive a ghostly message!

Jessica must remember her Dad’s rules – Notice everything.  Question everything.  When in trouble, do absolutely anything to get away!

Phew…..what an action packed summary!

Straight from the offset this book pulled me in and got me fully intrigued with a brilliant prologue!  The prologue tells the story of pop star Madison who whilst attending the Grammy’s wears a million dollar diamond necklace and this is when we first encounter the mysterious ghost!  This sets up the book brilliantly and made me immediately want to read more!

This book had some great characters!  Old and new!  One of my favourite characters was Kat who’s love for Kesha (the popstar) knows no bounds!  Yes she was annoying and very frustrating and that is exactly how she is meant to come across – that’s her character but I loved her strops and tantrums as they gave me as a reader a bit of a giggle amongst all of the action and goings on.  Jessica aptly names her Kat the Brat and Kat is her Dad’s little kotik – little cat!

Fashion Assassin does not fail on gadgets for Jessica either!  At one point I almost cried when Jessica was told she was not allowed any gadgets on this mission!  WHAT!  I shrieked at my book and then felt Sarah Sky had done exactly what she set out to do in her writing as when the gadgets were given to Jessica they were AMAZING!  Some gadget highlights for me were a Chanel lipstick movement sensor with diamond earrings that will alert Jessica if the sensor is triggered!  I was highly disappointed I did not get these for valentines day yesterday! 🙂  There was also a charm bracelet with explosives, a pendant necklace which would provide oxygen for seven minutes if deprived of oxygen or underwater and a gold Rolex watch with wire stronger than steel and a laser to cut through steel also!  These are simply must have’s for any model spy….and I simply want them in my life too!  I loved seeing one of my old favourites from Code Red Lipstick making an appearance again too…the loose powder compact where you blow the powder at a suspect to knock them out, but this time with extra modifications including a photograph scanner and fingerprint storage facility!  Wow!  Love!  Love! Love!

I think the reason I loved this book so much was that with every page turn there was tension and mystery or even a twist which turned all my theory’s upside down even when I thought I had it sussed!  The ending was full on action packed and I could not turn the pages fast enough!  With the pacing being perfect and my heart racing faster I flew through this book and it didn’t disappoint and with a very intriguing last line in the book I can’t wait for the next instalment of the wonderful Jessica Cole series!

I would recommend this book to any one looking for an action packed adventure with a hint of mystery, humour and a kick ass heroine!

If ever I were in trouble I would call Jessica Cole….or if she’s not available definitely Sarah Sky who is a master of Karate and could do some serious damage! *gulps*

PS – if my husband is reading this I will now also like a trip to Monaco as well as Paris!  Hint Hint Hint!  Don’t give me that look…you can blame Sarah Sky for introducing me to these wonderful places in her books and taking me on a fictional adventure that I want to see for myself as they sound so beautiful!

And a million dollar yacht wouldn’t go a miss either 😉

I award this book 5 out of 5 Tales Of Yesterday Books!

Wow!  This book had everything I could possibly want from a book!  A strong main character, super cool gadgets, super gorgeous dresses , mystery, an evil villain and the possibility of putting you off face cream for life!  I loved every second of reading this book and Sarah Sky pulls you right into the action, danger and suspense with twisty turns and a trip to Paris!

Code Red Lipstick is the 1st book in the Jessica Cole Model Spy Series telling the story of school girl Jessica who is a model surgically attached to her favourite lip gloss and mascara wanting to branch out into bigger fashion campaigns and who loves gadgets and has unintentionally started training to become a spy!  Trained by her ex MI6 spy Dad who has OSDS (Overprotective Single Dad Syndrome) and has mysteriously disappeared Jessica finds herself accepting a modelling job in Paris to give her an alibi in beginning the search for her missing Dad and the mysterious disappearance of Sam Bishop who Jessica finds her Dad was employed to find before he disappeared!  Jessica finds that someone does not want her to find her Dad or Sam Bishop and they will go to an lengths to stop her!  And who is the mysterious Starfish?!  Phew…..what an action packed summary!

All of the characters in this book are so easily likeable, well except the bad guys of course!  You have Jessica a head strong feisty girl who whilst being a model is juggling school work and giving her Dad a hand with some night time spying.  As well as being awesome Jessica is also caring and loving and the relationship she has with her best friend Becky who asks very little questions and supports Jessica no matter what is everything you would want in a best friend.  Then there’s MI6 agents Margaret and Nathan who are both polar opposites and very unique whilst giving the sense that being MI6 they mean business!  There is a love interest for Jessica but in this book it is not forced to the forefront and lays in the background which was perfect as it did not distract me from reading all the action as she leaves him at home whilst road tripping to Paris!  You go girl!

The way that Sarah Sky develops the character of Jessica and her back story is a revelation.  The back story of Jessica’s Mom, who died when Jessica was little, is revealed to the reader the further you progress in the book which hooked me in wanting to know more and with Jessica hunting and finding clues towards finding her Dad this made this book a page turner.

There is so much to love above this book!  Something I especially loved is that is has gadgets galore!  I simply want them all!  There’s secret powder compacts, flame thrower hair spray, foam perfume, a super cool “spiderman” bracelet, and fab I-pads with super technology!  I could do some damage with those gadgets!  There is a part in the book where Jessica uses one of her Dad’s gadgets to tackle a school bully with hilarious consequences which really made me laugh and think I need one of those in my life!  I’m also a big fan of moving book cases that reveal hidden passage ways and I got my fix early on in the book.

For a teen spy novel I felt Code Red Lipstick had the right amount of action and mystery for me all mixed with some humour and fashion.  Whilst not being a fashion expert and no where near what I would class as fashionable (lol) I had heard of many of the fashion names suggested and whilst the modelling and fashion are part of the book they are not overpowering as they just weave into the story line perfectly.  The descriptions of the beautiful dresses are just gorgeous with Sarah Sky really making me imagine the beautiful clothing and wishing I could reach out and grab them!  Although maybe not wear them as I’m no Kate Moss you know 🙂

Being taken on a trip to Paris within the book was also wonderful.  I haven’t been to Paris for a few years now and I have fond memories.  The descriptions in this book have made me want to revisit that Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and French bistros asap! *yes this is a hint to my husband if you are reading this – hint hint hint!*

I would recommend this book to any one looking for an action packed adventure with a hint of mystery, humour and a kick ass heroine!

If ever I were in trouble I would call Jessica Cole….or if she’s not available definitely Sarah Sky who is a master of Karate and could do some serious damage! *gulps*

I have also read book two – Fashion Assassin – see my full review here.   I also did a spotlight on Jessica Cole for a recent blog tour which you can find here.
